Yesterday the Dallas Federal Reserve Chairman, Mr. Fisher, stated he expected zero economic growth. This does not give us a very positive outlook for the economy. So what is the average person to do?

One could choose to continue with the normal rutine of their life and hope that everything turns out well for the future. I have seen this “head in the sand” stratagy in the past. Sometimes it works and other times it doesn’t I really feel sorry for those that it fails for because they loose everything.

You know your boss will not protect you from the cost cutting choppimng block. If it is his head or yours I doubt he will be headless but I would take the bet you will be. So how do you keep your job and protect yourself?

Invest some money in yourself and start a home business. Is it going to be a program that you will become a millionare overnight? No!!! If somebody tells you this run away. The only real businesses grow over time. The key is that you don’t quit.

Most home businesses grow very slowly at first but they do grow. The interesting thing is that the growth tends to be exponential so that the longer you stick with the business the faster it grows. Unfortunately 90% of the participants in home businesses never stick it out long enough to see this growth but I believe it is this way in every business.

So I hope this helps you while you are looking at opportunities. I hope you look into ours. It is very fun and profitable. I would like to personally help you build a business that will help you if this slow economic time makes your boss protect his own head and cut yours off.

This week has been very busy in my Ambit Energy business. Part of my time was spent helping a member of my downline correct some errors he was making in his business. After reviewing the errors of his ways we came up with what we thought the top six mistakes mlm business owners make.

I shared this information with the leaders of my team and I though I would share it with the viewers of my blog. So here are Kevin’s tips of the Top Ten Mistakes MLM business owners make.

I. Setting Crazy Goals
We all get into this business to make money and we can all make a lot of money when we work our businesses. The problem is that people look at individuals that have 4 and 5 year old businesses making over $100,000 a month and they think they will make that much money in a year. I think a MLM business grows slowly at first but over time it begins to grow exponentially. A business owner cannot expect to earn $20,000 a month when they have five consultants. You can make $20,000 when you have 500 so set your goals and make them achievable but don’t error and fail to push yourself a little. Just don’t set the bar so high that you discourage yourself and quit.

II. Buying A Business and sitting on it, never telling anybody about it. In my opinion this is the biggest sin mlm business owners make. Everybody you know and come into contact with needs to know about your business and learn how he or she can profit from it. At a minimum they should be your customers. Nothing upsets me more than when I council a consultant and we review who they have told about their business. In every case the people that are frustrated on my team are individuals that have people on their list they have not spoken with about their business. In order to be in business you must market your business and marketing means success. When a new consultant enters the business they need to start their marketing to people they know and people who know them. This leads me to mistake number three.

III. Spending money on advertising before it is time.
So many people get into the mlm business and make mistake II so what do they do. Well they start to spend a lot of money on newspaper ads, Internet marketing, radio spots and yes even television commercials. They rationalize this by saying I don’t want to talk with my friends about my business until I can show them a large check. This is backwards thinking and destined to fail. Never spend any money advertising when you first start your business. Only spend money from your business profits and reinvest them in your business by advertising. You know enough people to build a large enough team so your business can generate the money you need to advertise.

You also must remember that your downline is watching you. You need them to exhaust their personal contacts so they succeed. If you don’t do it I can promise you they will not either.

IV. Not Behaving Like You Own A Business
Imagine this, you own a multi-million dollar business and it is Monday morning. The sun is up it is 10:00AM, you wait in line with five people have a coffee at Starbucks and you have not even given your business an ounce of your energy. Twelve noon passes you have a great lunch with three co-workers and you still have not given your business a moments thought. You leave your job (just over broke) at 5:00 and head to the local watering hole meet up with four friends and talk with six strangers. About 8:00PM you head home and start to get ready to retire for the evening. About 10:00PM you upline calls you and asked if you were okay because they we’re worried about you since you did not make the team business meeting. You tell them that you are afraid that the business doesn’t work and you don’t think you can do it.

Wow, I hear this every once and a while. The reason the business doesn’t work is because you did not work the business. You expect your upline to wave some magic wand and wham you have money coming in. You’re the farmer in the spring waiting for harvest but you didn’t do any work in the fall planting seeds and tilling the soil.

Let’s review our story. This person had at least 19 opportunities to grow their business during the day but they choose to share it with nobody. They had an opportunity to recharge their battery and learn more about their business but having drinks was more important. Then they told their upline the business doesn’t work. Really, I think there is only one person not working here and it is the consultant. I hate to say it but eighty percent of the people that get into network marketing will call into this reason for failure and they will blame everybody and everything and not truthfully examine the exact source of the failure.

V. Failing To Follow Up On Your Leads
A good network marketer must always follow up on their leads.  This is the least expensive part of our business and the most profitable.

When you find somebody that has expressed an interest or at the minimum has questions you must respond immediately.

VI. Getting Advice From Failures
I want to jump out of a window every time I present my business to a prospect and I ask them if it makes sense. They will usually say it does and then I ask if they are ready to get started some say yes. Most say, I want to talk with some of my friends about it first. I always think to myself the friends they are going to discuss a life changing opportunity with are most likely in the same economic status, same neighborhood and at the same level of misery that my prospect is in. I get advise from people that are more successful than me but most people go to their friends. Look this is a real business you are about to invest into. Do yourself a favor, when you want advice at a minimum asks a successful business owner. Don’t ask the advice of somebody that is just as broke as you are.

When you start a home business you will need an assistant to help you succeed. My experience is that my best employee is my computer. The opportunity is that every year technology changes and I need to update my system. A company that I have found that is helping a lot of businesses is all in one desktops.

The key is that the owners of the service businesses have a passion to serve their clients. If this fire is not a part of their soul than success is hard to achieve.

As a prospective home business owner you need to start searching within yourself to find what it is that gets you excited. I mean something that keeps you awake at night. You must find an activity that you would rather do more than anything else.

What I want you to remember is that there is nothing like the sense of accomplishment one achieves when they are chasing their dreams. On of the realizations that you have been successful is when you learn that your decision to have your own business also gives you the freedom to control your life. When a friend asks you to do something you don’t have to ask the boss. You just make sure your work for clients is up to date and you go. This is freedom my friend. I hope you keep searching until you find what you are looking for but please don’t ever sell out your dreams.

So here we are, its mid summer 2008 and we are in the middle of a huge election cycle. McCain and Obama are both talking about how they are going to help us and the question is how will they really help? Do you think that they are really going to stay awake at night worrying about you and your family? Sure they will.

So the real question should be what are you going to do to insulate your family from this economic turn down because you truly cannot depend on the government. This brings me to Network Marketing as a way to increase your income. I am not talking about a get rich scheme. I am talking about a real business that you must invest money and time into. When you work a network marketing business you will see that you will bake money over time.
